The unit weight of steel is calculated using the formula D²/162.2. Total weight is Unit Weight × Length × Quantity.

Unit Weight (kg/m) = D² / 162.2

Total Weight = Unit Weight × Length × Quantity

For 10 bars of 12mm rebar, each 12m long:
• Unit Weight = (12 × 12) / 162.2 = 0.888 kg/m
• Total Weight = 0.888 × 12 × 10 = 106.56 kg

What is the formula for steel weight?

The standard formula is D²/162.2 where D is the diameter in millimetres. This gives the weight in kilograms per metre.

Why 162.2?

It is derived from the density of steel (7850 kg/m³) and the conversion from diameter (mm) to area (m²).
